Gun Collectors Dream Auction #84 June 13th & 14th
Lot 1065:
Sold for: $525
Description
This Colt Detective Special is a double-action revolver chambered in .38 Special, configured as a compact snub-nose sidearm for concealed carry. The firearm features a 2-inch barrel equipped with a shrouded ejector rod and a six-shot swing-out cylinder. The metal surfaces exhibit a high-polish blued finish. The revolver is fitted with non-standard, heavily carved wood grips featuring a deep floral motif and brass-colored screw bushings. Sights consist of a fixed front blade and a square-notch rear integrated into the frame’s top strap, which currently shows a small application of orange high-visibility paint near the hammer. Key markings include the model and caliber designation on the left side of the barrel as DETECTIVE SPEC. and .38 SPECIAL CTG. while the right side of the barrel is marked COLT’S PT. F.A. MFG. CO. / HARTFORD, CONN. U.S.A. verbatim. The left side of the frame displays the rampant colt logo, and the front left of the trigger guard bears the VP within a triangle proof mark. The serial number D7022R is explicitly stamped on the frame and the crane, visible when the cylinder is in the open position. Note – All firearms require a federal 4473 background check.
Condition report:
The high-polish blued finish shows areas of thinning and visible wear, particularly on the left side of the frame behind the cylinder and along the sharp edges. Light surface oxidation is present within the ejector rod channel. The bore is bright with sharp, well-defined rifling. The action appears to function correctly with solid lockup, though we have not function-tested this firearm. The non-standard carved wood grips are in good condition with crisp decorative details and no significant chips or cracks. A small amount of orange paint is present on the rear of the top strap.
