Description
This Remington Model 878 Automaster is a 12 gauge semi-automatic shotgun designed for 2 3/4 inch or shorter shells. It features a 28 inch barrel with a fixed full choke and a single bead front sight. The firearm is built with a blued steel receiver and is fitted with a plain walnut stock and forend. Key markings include the model designation on the left side of the receiver, which is roll-marked Remington ® Automaster over the serial number 2438L and MODEL 878 ®. The left side of the barrel is marked 12 GA. FOR 2 3/4 OR SHORTER SHELLS and FULL, with additional date or inspection stamps reading A B F F. The right side of the barrel displays the manufacturer’s information, REMINGTON ARMS CO. INC., ILION, N.Y. MADE IN U.S.A. above patent numbers 2,645,878 and 2,675,638. An REP proof mark within an oval is stamped on the right side of the barrel lug. The configuration is completed with a factory-branded black plastic Remington buttplate. Note – All firearms require a federal 4473 background check.
Condition report:
The original blued finish shows significant thinning and wear, particularly on the receiver which has aged to a mottled grey and brown patina. The barrel retains a higher percentage of bluing but exhibits scattered surface scratches and minor thinning at the muzzle. The walnut furniture shows moderate handling marks, dings, and surface scratches throughout, including a localized area of finish loss on the left side of the wrist where the stock meets the receiver. The bore is bright and appears to be in good condition. The action appears to function correctly, though we have not function-tested this firearm with live ammunition.
