Description
This lot features one wooden buttstock designed for the Thompson M1 and M1A1 series submachine guns. The stock is constructed from walnut and exhibits the fixed-mount profile characteristic of these military firearms. The forward section is correctly inletted to accommodate the rear grip frame and receiver tang of the Thompson. It retains the original transverse black-finished metal recoil plate screw and bushing at the wrist, intended for reinforcement during recoil. A distinctive feature of this particular stock is a transverse sling slot cut into the right side of the butt, resembling the design found on the US M1 Carbine. The wood appears to be in an unfinished or stripped state, showing significant dark oil staining and evidence of historical use. This component is missing the metal buttplate and its associated mounting hardware.
Condition report:
The wooden buttstock is in good used condition, displaying numerous surface dings, shallow scratches, and pervasive dark staining consistent with military surplus items. The wood surface is dry and lacks a protective topcoat. The metal transverse screw and bushing show minor wear to the black finish but are otherwise in good order. There are no major cracks or structural compromises visible in the wood. The inletted mounting points remain sharp and appear to be in functional condition.
