Lot 101:
Sold for: $200
Description
This lot consists of a World War II United States Marine Corps Hospital Corpsman knife, a heavy-duty utility tool frequently referred to as a corpsman machete. These blades were specifically issued to medical personnel serving in the Pacific Theater for clearing jungle brush to establish field hospitals and aid stations. The knife features a heavy-gauge carbon steel blade with a distinctive rounded spatula-shaped tip and a single cutting edge. The handle is constructed of two wooden scales secured to the full tang by four large metal rivets. The left face of the blade is stamped with the marking U.S.M.C. The accompanying sheath is made of heavy-duty stitched brown leather and includes a brass-reinforced throat and a wire-style belt hook hanger on the reverse side. The belt loop attachment is clearly stamped USMC / BOYT / 45, identifying the manufacturer as the Boyt Harness Company and the date of production as 1945.
Blade Length: 11 inches
Total Length: 16.5 inches.
Condition report:
The knife is in fair to good original condition, displaying signs of age and service wear. The blade exhibits a heavy dark patina with scattered surface pitting and oxidation. The wooden handle scales show significant age-related cracking, including a large longitudinal split on the left scale and a vertical crack through the pommel end. The leather sheath remains structurally sound but shows scuffing, darkening, and minor verdigris around the brass hardware.
