Description

This modern Japanese-style sword (katana) is constructed with a pattern-welded steel blade featuring a prominent wavy grain pattern. The blade includes a defined ridge line and tip. The brass-toned metal collar at the base of the blade (habaki) is stamped with the serial number 96781. The tang (nakago) is incised with Japanese katakana characters reading Shimoyama Shinji (下山シンジ) and includes an additional black numerical marking. The hilt (tsuka) is wrapped in a beige fabric cord over a textured ray skin (samegawa) base. The hilt collar (fuchi), pommel (kashira), and ornaments (menuki) consist of cast openwork designs with foliate motifs accented in gold and silver colors. The circular guard (tsuba) displays similar relief and openwork decoration. The wooden scabbard (saya) is finished in a deep red lacquer with a decorative crackle pattern and is mounted with three ornate metal fittings that match the style of the hilt components.

Blade Length: 27 inches
Total Length: 40.75 inches.

Condition report:

The item is in good overall condition. The lacquer on the scabbard displays a deliberate crackle effect and remains glossy. Minor oxidation and wear are visible on the metallic finishes of the fittings. The blade shows a clear grain pattern and appears well-maintained.
