Description

This is a French Model 1874 Gras sword bayonet, a standard-issue edged weapon designed for use with the 11mm Gras centerfire rifle. The blade is manufactured from steel with a distinctive T-back triangular cross-section that tapers to a sharp point. The hilt is composed of two-piece walnut grips secured to the tang by two steel rivets. It features a polished brass pommel with an integrated spring-loaded locking mechanism and mounting slot for attachment to a rifle barrel. The steel crossguard includes a muzzle ring and a prominent forward-curved hooked quillon terminating in a ball finial.

Visible markings include an engraved cursive script on the blade spine reading Mre d’Armes de St. Etienne 7bre 1876, identifying the manufacturer as the Manufacture d’Armes de Saint-Etienne and the production date as September 1876. The ricasso is stamped with two small military inspection marks: a letter M within a circle and a diamond-shaped stamp. The reverse side of the crossguard bears the serial number F 5311. The hooked quillon is further marked with small circular inspection stamps containing the letters M and G.

Blade Length: 20 inches
Total Length: 25 inches.

Condition report:

The item is in original, uncleaned condition. The steel blade and crossguard exhibit a consistent dark aged patina with scattered areas of surface oxidation and light pitting. The walnut wood grips are intact with standard handling wear, minor dings, and staining consistent with age. The brass pommel shows a natural aged tarnish. The mechanical spring-loaded locking button is functional.
