Gun Collectors Dream Auction #85 Weapons of War July 18th 10AM CST
Lot 232:
Sold for: $75
Description
A 19th-century French Model 1847 (Mle 1847) socket bayonet and its accompanying leather scabbard. The bayonet features a steel blade with a triangular cross-section and deep longitudinal fullers on all three faces, designed to provide rigidity while reducing weight. The blade is offset from the socket by a curved bridge. The cylindrical socket is engineered with a three-motion zig-zag mounting slot and is equipped with a rotating locking ring, or clasp, secured by a single slotted screw. A clearly incised inspector mark consisting of the letter D enclosed within an oval is present on the flat section of the bridge. Additional indistinct numerical markings are located on the socket near the slot. The scabbard consists of a black leather body with a visible stitched seam along the rear. It is fitted with brass hardware, including a locket at the throat and a pointed chape at the tip.
Condition report:
The bayonet is in antique condition. The steel components exhibit a dark, matured patina with overall surface oxidation and areas of localized pitting, particularly on the socket and bridge. The locking ring remains in place. The leather of the scabbard shows surface cracking and age-related wear but remains structurally sound. The brass fittings are heavily tarnished, and the chape shows minor indentations and wear at the tip.
