Description
This is a Portuguese Model 1904 bayonet manufactured by Simson and Company of Suhl, Germany, for use with the 6.5mm Mauser-Vergueiro rifle. The weapon features a long, single-edged steel blade with a deep, rounded fuller ending before the spear-point tip. The hilt is composed of a steel crossguard with an integrated muzzle ring and a distinctive hooked quillon. The contoured wooden grip scales are secured to the tang with two steel rivets. The steel pommel is equipped with a diagonal T-O shaped attachment slot and a functional, spring-loaded push-button release mechanism. The ricasso is stamped in two lines with the maker mark SIMSON and CO. SUHL. The spine of the blade near the crossguard bears a small oval stamp containing the characters RB, which is a standard Portuguese military inspection and acceptance mark. Small stamped numbers 3 and 4 are visible on the side of the crossguard.
Condition report:
The bayonet is in very good overall condition. The blade maintains a bright finish with minor scattered areas of light oxidation and surface peppering. The steel hilt components show a smooth, dark gray patina. The wooden grips are well-preserved with a dark color and display only minor handling marks consistent with age and service. All mechanical components, including the pommel release button, are in good working order. This item is offered without a scabbard.
