Lot 290:
Sold for: $140
Description
One United States military Model 284 Woodman’s Pal survival tool, manufactured by the Victor Tool Company of Reading, Pennsylvania during World War II. This tool features a heavy, curved high-carbon steel blade designed for chopping and clearing brush. The spine of the blade includes a sharpened sickle-style hook for cutting vines. The handle is constructed of stacked and compressed leather washers terminating in a steel pommel. A protective steel D-guard knuckle bow is integrated into the hilt. The blade is clearly stamped on the left side with the manufacturer and model designation WOODMAN’S PAL 284, along with the company shield-shaped trademark flanked by the words TRADE MARK. This tool was a standard survival implement issued to aircrews and ground forces for utility and pioneering work.
Condition report:
The tool is in as-found battlefield condition. The steel components exhibit significant surface oxidation and heavy pitting across all surfaces. Small nicks are visible along the primary cutting edge from field use, alongside evidence of past manual sharpening. The stacked leather washer grip remains structurally sound but shows deep darkening and wear consistent with age and use. No scabbard or sheath is present.
