Gun Collectors Dream Auction #85 Weapons of War July 18th 10AM CST
Lot 292:
Sold for: $110
Description
This socket bayonet is of the pattern attributed to the French Model 1777 and the U.S. Model 1795, which was utilized during the Napoleonic Wars and the American Revolutionary period. The weapon is manufactured from forged steel and consists of a cylindrical socket with a bridge-reinforced slot designed to fit a musket barrel lug. A notable characteristic of this early pattern is the absence of a rotating locking ring, a feature introduced in later 19th-century models. The socket is connected via a cranked neck to a long blade with a triangular cross-section. The blade features deep longitudinal fullers on two faces to maintain structural rigidity while reducing overall weight. Identification is based on architectural features and period geometry, as extensive surface oxidation and pitting have rendered any original markings, manufacturer stamps, or arsenal dates illegible.
Condition report:
The item is in relic condition. It displays heavy, dark surface oxidation and significant deep pitting across the socket, neck, and blade. The original factory finish is entirely lost to corrosion. While heavily weathered, the piece retains its primary structural integrity and characteristic form.
