Description

This is a single drum-style circular water canteen manufactured by Boyce, a company primarily known for automotive accessories in the early 20th century. The body is constructed from galvanized or tinned sheet metal consisting of two halves joined by a rolled perimeter seam. Both faces feature a concentric recessed design for added structural rigidity. The canteen is fitted with a threaded metal screw cap that features knurled edges and is clearly stamped with the maker name BOYCE on the top. Three metal loops are soldered at intervals around the perimeter to secure the carrying strap. The item includes a wide, single-ply leather strap that is secured to one loop with a knot and wire repair. While visually similar to 19th-century military drum canteens, this specific model was produced as a commercial accessory for early motorists, often mounted on vehicle running boards for use in desert or long-distance travel.

Condition report:

The metal body exhibits a heavy age-related patina with mottled gray oxidation and scattered areas of active surface rust, particularly concentrated along the seams and on the screw cap. Minor indentations and surface scratches are present, consistent with utilitarian use. The leather strap is in fragile, aged condition, showing significant drying, cracking, and surface loss. One side of the strap has been repaired or reinforced with a wire tie.
