Description

This is a single Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor breech-loading carbine chambered in .45-70 Government and configured with an overall length of 41.5 inches. The firearm features a 22-inch round barrel and metal components displaying a significant aged patina with areas of surface oxidation and pitting consistent with military service. The rifle is equipped with a walnut carbine stock featuring a straight wrist and showing various dings and handling marks from age. Technical specifications include a hooded front sight and a rear ladder sight marked with a C for carbine range graduations. Key markings include the lock plate stamped with an eagle and the characters U. S. over SPRINGFIELD, while the top of the breech block is marked U. S. over MODEL over 1884. The receiver is explicitly marked with serial number 114577. The barrel displays proof marks including V, P, an eagle head symbol, and a second P, alongside a small letter A. The firearm is fitted with a single barrel band, a carbine sling bar with an attached ring on the left side of the stock, and a steel buttplate with a tang marked U. S. featuring a hinged trapdoor for tool storage. Note – As an antique or black powder firearm, this item does not require a background check.

Condition report:

The metal components exhibit a heavy brown and grey patina with widespread surface oxidation and areas of light to moderate pitting, particularly on the barrel and around the breech. The walnut stock is in good overall condition, remaining solid with numerous small indentations, scratches, and surface wear consistent with historical use, but no significant cracks are observed. The bore is dark with visible rifling and some internal pitting. The breech-loading action appears to function correctly, though we have not function-tested this firearm with live ammunition. The sights are intact and the carbine sling ring remains securely attached.
