Lot 369:
Sold for: $325
Description
This is a German Gewehr 88 bolt-action rifle, widely known as the Commission Rifle, chambered in 8mm. The firearm features a full-length wood stock and a distinctive metal barrel jacket designed to protect the barrel and aid in cooling. The receiver ring is clearly marked with a crown over SPANDAU and the production date 1893. The left side of the receiver is stamped with the model designation Gew. 88. and the letters n.m., which signifies the rifle was manufactured using newer, stronger steel. Key markings include the serial number 9815 on the receiver and barrel jacket, while the bolt is a non-matching replacement marked 455. The rifle is equipped with an integrated box magazine and a ladder-style rear sight. The wood furniture displays various handling marks, military cartouches, and the initials L W F carved into the right side of the buttstock. Included documentation notes the bore measures approximately .319 inches. Note – As an antique or black powder firearm, this item does not require a background check.
Condition report:
The metal finish has transitioned to a dark mottled patina with significant surface oxidation and pitting visible across the barrel jacket and receiver. The wood stock is in fair to good condition, showing numerous dings, scratches, and pressure marks typical of its age and service history. The bolt is non-matching to the receiver. The bore is reported to be shiny with strong rifling according to provided records, though we have not personally inspected the internal bore. The action appears to function correctly, but the firearm has not been function-tested for safety or accuracy.
