Description

A mid-19th-century French infantry or auxiliary short sword, often referred to as a sabre briquet. This non-regulation or specialized variant features a robust iron hilt instead of the standard brass, a configuration typically associated with auxiliary units, pioneer corps, or private purchase during the reign of Louis-Philippe I. The hilt is designed with a simple D-shaped knuckle bow and a downward-curved quillon terminating in a scroll finial. The grip consists of two dark scales, likely horn, pinned to a full metal tang. One side of the grip is incised with the date 1837. preceded by a character resembling a 7 or L. The broad, curved, single-edged steel blade has been shortened from its original length. Traces of red paint are visible on the blade and hilt, likely indicating past museum or collection inventory marks.

Blade Length: 18.25 inches
Total Length: 23 inches.

Condition report:

The sword is in aged, as-found condition. The blade and iron hilt exhibit a heavy, dark patina with areas of surface oxidation and pitting throughout. The cutting edge shows several small nicks, and the blade has been significantly shortened from its regulation length. The grip scales remain structurally sound but show wear consistent with age, including a crack near the bolster.
