Gun Collectors Dream Auction #85 Weapons of War July 18th 10AM CST
Lot 380:
Sold for: $525
Description
One naval-style saber featuring a curved single-edged steel blade with a broad fuller. The hilt assembly is composed of a cast brass D-guard knuckle bow terminating in a forward-scrolled quillon. The grip is fashioned from a single piece of carved bone and is secured by a brass pommel cap featuring embossed foliate decoration. No maker marks, inscriptions, or stamps are legible on the blade or hilt components. The construction is characteristic of maritime sidearms from the late 18th to early 19th century, resembling French sabres de bord or American officer hangers of the period.
Condition report:
The item shows significant age-related wear. The steel blade is heavily oxidized with widespread rust and deep pitting throughout. The brass hilt components exhibit a dark, uncleaned patina. The bone grip remains intact with expected longitudinal cracks and surface discoloration. No scabbard is present.
