Gun Collectors Dream Auction #85 Weapons of War July 18th 10AM CST
Lot 406:
Sold for: $45
Description
This lot consists of 40 rounds of early production .45 caliber ammunition manufactured by Frankford Arsenal, contained within two original 20-round cardboard boxes. The cartridges are constructed with brass cases and copper-jacketed round-nose ball projectiles, featuring a visible cannelure and primers protected by a red lacquer sealant. Each cartridge headstamp is marked with the letters F and A and the digits 1 and 0, indicating production at the Frankford Arsenal in 1910, which corresponds to the final trials phase prior to the official adoption of the M1911 pistol. Verbatim markings on the box labels identify the contents as 20 CARTRIDGES, PISTOL, BALL CALIBER .45 M 1911 and specify they are For AUTOMATIC PISTOL, CAL. .45 M 1911. One box is further identified with Powder, Pistol, No. 5, Army Lot X-89 and Cartridge Lot No. 300, while the second carries the designation Powder, Pistol, No. 5, Army Lot 101 and Ammunition Lot No. 412. Both boxes are labeled Frankford Arsenal B 503 and retain their original green cloth pull tabs. The reverse side of each box includes instructions stating Empty cartridge cases should be cared for and disposed of as prescribed in paragraph 29, Army Regulations 775-10.
Condition report:
The ammunition is in very good collectible condition, with the brass cases and copper bullet jackets exhibiting a natural, light patina consistent with age. The red primer sealant remains vibrant and largely intact. The cardboard boxes show moderate shelf wear, including minor staining, edge fraying, and fading to the pinkish-tan paper labels, though all printed text remains clear and legible. The original green cloth pull tabs are present and remain securely attached to the box lids.
