Description
This Australian Lithgow SMLE No. 1 Mk III* is a bolt-action military rifle chambered in .303 British. It features a 25.2 inch barrel fitted with a bayonet lug, a protected front post sight, and an adjustable tangent rear sight graduated to 2,000 yards. The rifle is equipped with a 10-round detachable box magazine and a standard military-style full-length wood stock with a brass buttplate featuring a trapdoor. Key markings include the right side of the butt socket stamped with a five-pointed star over a shield containing LITHGOW / SHT.LE / III* and dated 1919. The receiver ring and bolt handle bear the matching serial number A 52862. The right side of the wooden buttstock is stamped with No 4 over A 52862, along with the markings A.H. and HV near the heel. The underside of the forend is marked SLAZ / 42 and M. An import mark on the charger bridge reads JJCO NY NY .303 B. Note – All firearms require a federal 4473 background check.
Condition report:
The rifle is in fair to good condition, showing significant wear consistent with military service. The blued finish on the metal components has thinned extensively, exhibiting silvering on high edges, general handling wear, and areas of scattered surface oxidation. The wood stock displays numerous handling marks, including scratches, dings, and small gouges throughout, but appears structurally sound with no major cracks visible. The brass buttplate has a darkened patina with various small impact marks. The action appears to function correctly when cycled, though we have not function-tested this firearm.
