Description

A French Model 1866 Chassepot sword bayonet and matching scabbard. This example was manufactured at the Manufacture d Armes de Saint-Etienne in November 1871. The bayonet features a single-edged steel blade with a distinctive yataghan recurve and wide longitudinal fullers on both sides. The hilt is composed of a ribbed brass grip and a spring-loaded steel press button for rifle mounting. The steel crossguard includes a muzzle ring and a downward-curved quillon with a ball tip. The spine of the blade is engraved in cursive script with the maker and date: Mre d Armes de St Etienne 9bre 1871. The crossguard is stamped with serial number Z 19095 and various circular inspection poincons. The accompanying sheet-steel scabbard features a matching serial number Z 19095 at the throat, as well as a struck-through previous serial number L 43892. The scabbard is completed with a fixed frog stud and a ball finial.

Condition report:

The bayonet and scabbard are in good historical condition. The brass grip has developed a deep, dark patina. The steel crossguard and scabbard show uniform surface oxidation and light pitting consistent with age. The blade remains relatively bright with some scattered oxidation and light wear to the edge. All mechanical components, including the spring-loaded button, appear functional. Markings and serial numbers remain clear and legible.
