Description
This German Mauser Model 1871/84 bolt-action rifle is chambered in 11mm Mauser (11x60R) and represents the repeatable tubular magazine evolution of the original single-shot Model 1871. The rifle features a full-length round barrel equipped with a fixed blade front sight and a flip-up ladder rear sight assembly. The metal surfaces, including the octagonal-to-round barrel and the receiver, retain a thinning blued finish that has developed a smooth, even brownish patina consistent with age. The full-length hardwood stock exhibits significant handling wear, displaying numerous scattered scratches, dings, and impressions throughout. Key markings transcribed verbatim include the model designation I. G. Mod. 71/84. in Gothic script on the left receiver flat and the date 1878 on the right side of the receiver. The top of the barrel shank is marked with a crown over SPANDAU and the serial number 3409 is clearly visible and matching on the receiver, barrel, bolt assembly, trigger guard floorplate, and buttplate. Numerous Imperial German proof marks consisting of various crowned letters are stamped across the major components. This rifle is accompanied by a grey Sack-Ups brand fabric gun sock. Note – As an antique or black powder firearm, this item does not require a background check.
Condition report:
The rifle is in good antique condition, exhibiting honest wear from period use. The original blued finish shows widespread thinning and a transitioned brown patina with light surface oxidation present on the barrel and receiver, though no deep pitting is observed. The bore was not inspected. The hardwood stock remains structurally sound with no visible cracks, showing an abundance of handling marks, dings, and surface scratches consistent with its age and military history. The bolt action appears to cycle smoothly and the trigger mechanism is functional, though we have not function-tested this firearm with live ammunition. All markings and serial numbers remain clear and legible.
