Lot 507:
Sold for: $775
Description
This single-shot breech-loading Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor rifle is chambered for the .45-70 Government cartridge. It features a round barrel with a dark finish showing age-related thinning and minor surface pitting, set into a full-length walnut stock secured by two steel barrel bands. The metal surfaces exhibit a transition to a grey-brown patina in areas of frequent handling. Key markings include U.S. MODEL 1884 stamped on the breech block and the lock plate marked with a stamped eagle motif over U.S. SPRINGFIELD. The rear of the receiver is clearly stamped with the serial number 402589. The walnut stock displays various handling marks, dings, and a circular P proof mark on the underside of the wrist, alongside a faint inspector’s cartouche on the left side of the stock wrist. It is equipped with a Buffington adjustable rear sight on the barrel and an additional folding Vernier-style long-range peep sight mounted to the tang. A steel cleaning rod is stored beneath the barrel, and the buttplate tang is stamped U.S. Note – As an antique or black powder firearm, this item does not require a background check.
Condition report:
The rifle retains a good portion of its dark finish, which has thinned to a grey-brown patina in areas of wear with scattered light pitting on the barrel and receiver. The bore is dark but retains visible rifling. The breech-loading action and hammer appear to function correctly, though we have not function-tested this firearm. The walnut stock is solid with various dings and scratches consistent with age and service use. Both the Buffington and tang-mounted sights are intact and adjustable.
