Description

This lot consists of an original cardboard box containing 20 rounds of .30 caliber ball ammunition, Model 1906, specifically designated for aircraft use. Manufactured by the United States Cartridge Company of Lowell, Massachusetts, these cartridges are in the standard .30-06 Springfield chambering utilized by the United States military during the early 20th century. The face of the box is prominently printed with 20 CAL. 30 BALL CARTRIDGES MODEL 1906 and specifies FOR AIRCRAFT USE ONLY. Key markings include red-stamped lot data for powder including 1033, 1101, 1102, and 1116, alongside cartridge lot number 1255. Detailed instructional text on the packaging face advises that as soon as possible after firing, throw the cartridge cases into soda water, followed by thorough cleaning of the inside with a brush wiper or rag on the end of a wiping rod, and drying before packing loosely in ammunition boxes. The manufacturer is identified as Manuf. by UNITED STATES CARTRIDGE CO., LOWELL, MASS., U. S. A. with the technical reference Class 47, Division 3, Drawing No. 22.

Condition report:

The original cardboard packaging displays significant age-related yellowing, shelf wear, and some edge fraying. There is noticeable tearing and crushing at the top opening flap near the perforated seal. The box is currently preserved within a clear plastic wrap to prevent further deterioration. Although the individual cartridges cannot be directly inspected without breaching the vintage packaging, they appear to be original live rounds in their factory configuration. No signs of severe environmental damage or corrosion are visible on the exterior of the box.
