Description

This is a British military wooden ammunition transit chest, dated June 1954. The container was designed for the storage and transport of .303 caliber rifle ammunition. The front and top surfaces feature yellow stenciled markings that read 288 CART, .303 BALL, Mk 7 CTN, and GB25 6 54. This indicates the chest originally held 288 cartridges of Mark 7 Ball ammunition packed in cartons. The lot or manufacturer code GB25 is accompanied by the date 6 54, signifying June 1954. The chest is constructed of wood with steel reinforcement strapping along the corners and bottom edges, secured by metal rivets. It features a hinged lid with two metal toggle-style latches located at either end. A robust, rectangular metal carrying handle is mounted to the center of the lid. The interior is finished in natural wood.

Condition report:

The item is in good military surplus condition, showing wear consistent with age and service. The exterior wooden surfaces display various scuffs, scratches, and small chips. The yellow stenciled identification markings remain clear and highly legible. The metal strapping, handle, and latches show a dark patina with areas of surface oxidation and paint loss. The interior is clean with minor staining on the bottom panel. Latches and handle are in functional condition.
