Description
This German Kar 98a bolt action rifle was manufactured at the Erfurt arsenal in 1916 and is chambered in 7.92x57mm Mauser. The rifle is presented in a sporterized configuration featuring a 23.6 inch barrel and a cut down original military wood stock. Key markings include a crown over ERFURT and the year 1916 stamped on the receiver ring, while the left receiver rail is marked Kar. 98. in Gothic script. The rifle displays a matching serial number 4039 n on the receiver, barrel, magazine floorplate, and trigger guard, with the partial number 39 visible on smaller components including the bolt sleeve. The barrel is marked 7,91 near the receiver, and numerous Imperial German proof marks featuring crowned letters and eagles are present throughout the metalwork. The modified wood stock exhibits a circular wood repair patch on the right side of the butt and a visible split in the grain behind the receiver tang. The original military sights have been replaced with a receiver mounted Williams aperture rear sight and an aftermarket ramp style front sight fitted to the muzzle. The metal furniture is completed with a steel buttplate. Note – All firearms require a federal 4473 background check.
Condition report:
The blued finish on the metal surfaces shows significant wear and thinning throughout, having transitioned to a mottled brown patina with areas of light surface oxidation and peppering. The bore appears relatively dark but retains visible rifling. The bolt action appears to function correctly, though the rifle has not been function tested with live ammunition. The wood stock shows heavy handling wear consistent with its age and service, including numerous dings, scratches, and the aforementioned repair patch and tang crack.
