Lot 636:
Sold for: $425
Description
This is a U.S. Springfield Model 1866 Second Allin trapdoor breech loading rifle, chambered for the .50-70 Government cartridge. This example is a period modification of the standard service rifle, having been significantly shortened from its original length for a more compact configuration. The firearm utilizes a hinged trapdoor breech system fitted to a barrel cut down from a larger muzzleloading musket. The metal components exhibit a dark, aged patina with heavy surface pitting and oxidation visible across the barrel, breech block, and lock plate. The walnut stock has been shortened at the forend to accommodate a single barrel band and displays numerous dings, scratches, and shallow gouges consistent with field use. The rifle features a flip-up ladder-style rear sight and a fixed blade front sight. A small brass circular medallion is inset into the right side of the buttstock. Key markings include the date 1863 followed by an eagle with a shield and U.S. / SPRINGFIELD verbatim on the lock plate. Proof marks including V, P, and an eagle head are stamped on the left side of the barrel near the breech. This rifle is missing its original full-length stock and additional barrel bands due to the custom shortening. Note – As an antique or black powder firearm, this item does not require a background check.
Condition report:
The metal surfaces show a dark, heavy patina with significant pitting and surface oxidation throughout the barrel and receiver. The bore is not visible but the exterior condition suggests it is likely dark with some pitting. The trapdoor action appears to function mechanically, and the hammer holds at both full and half cock, though we have not function-tested this firearm with live ammunition. The walnut stock is well-worn with multiple impact marks and a notable shortening of the forend. The brass medallion in the stock shows heavy tarnish. The ramrod is present but appears to have been shortened to match the modified barrel length.
