Gun Collectors Dream Auction #85 Weapons of War July 18th 10AM CST
Lot 647:
Sold for: $325
Description
This is a professionally sporterized bolt-action rifle, built on a United States Model of 1917 military action manufactured at the Eddystone plant. Chambered in .30-06 Springfield, the rifle features a 26-inch barrel that retains the original military-style hooded post front sight. The receiver has been modified for civilian sporting use, involving the removal of the original rear sight assembly and its protective steel ears to accommodate the installation of a side-mounted, adjustable aperture rear sight. The metal components exhibit a dark blued finish with visible thinning on the bolt handle and high points of the receiver. The rifle is mounted in an attractive walnut Monte Carlo-style stock produced by Bishop Stocks, featuring a raised cheekpiece, a black composite buttplate with an inlaid Bishop Stocks medallion, and a contrasting black forend tip. Key markings on the receiver bridge include U.S. / MODEL OF 1917 / EDDYSTONE / 1201538. The barrel is stamped with a proof mark featuring the letter E over an ordnance bomb and the date 9 – 18, signifying production in September 1918. Note – All firearms require a federal 4473 background check.
Condition report:
The metal finish is in good condition, showing typical thinning and surface wear on the bolt handle, trigger guard, and sharp edges of the receiver. The bore remains bright with well-defined rifling. The action appears to function smoothly and correctly, though the firearm has not been function-tested with live ammunition. The Bishop walnut stock is well-maintained, displaying scattered minor scratches and pressure dings from use but remaining structurally sound. The rear aperture sight mechanism is intact and adjusts freely.
