Description

A pair of British No. 4 Mk II spike bayonets, commonly referred to as pig stickers, designed for use with the Lee-Enfield No. 4 rifle and the Sten Mk V submachine gun. This lot consists of two socket-type bayonets and two matching No. 4 Mk I tapered steel scabbards. One example features a textured socket with a heavy black protective finish, characteristic of wartime expedient manufacturing processes. The second example displays a smoother, machined socket with a polished steel blade. Both scabbards are constructed of steel and feature standard ball-tip terminals and circular frog studs. Identification markings are present on the side of the socket near the locking catch, but they are not clearly legible due to surface wear and the density of the applied finishes.

Condition report:

Both bayonets and scabbards are in good service-used condition. The first bayonet retains approximately 80 percent of its black painted finish with some chipping at the edges, and the blade shows surface oxidation and staining. The second bayonet retains most of its darkened socket finish, while its blade remains relatively bright with minor surface peppering. Both locking mechanisms are functional. The steel scabbards exhibit surface scratches and light oxidation consistent with field use but remain structurally sound with secure fittings.
