Description
This is an Argentine Mauser Modelo 1891 bolt-action rifle chambered for the 7.65x53mm Argentine cartridge, a significant early smokeless powder military arm. The rifle features a 29.1-inch barrel with a full-length hardwood stock and an upper handguard. Notable features include the characteristic external single-stack five-round box magazine and a rear ladder sight graduated to 2,000 meters with an inverted-V front post. The metal surfaces retain an original blued finish, and the receiver ring shows the common modification where the Argentine national crest was removed prior to export. Key markings include the model designation MAUSER MODELO ARGENTINO 1891. and the manufacturer stamp MANUFACTURA LOEWE BERLIN. prominently displayed on the left side of the receiver. The serial number N 5234 is clearly stamped on the receiver, barrel, stock, and cleaning rod, indicating these primary components remain matching. The bolt handle bears the non-matching serial number A 8021. The smooth straight-grip walnut stock is serial-matched to the receiver and retains its original steel buttplate and sling swivels. Condition report:
The metal surfaces are in good condition, retaining much of the original blued finish with light handling wear, some thinning on high edges, and evidence of professional grinding on the receiver ring where the crest was removed. The bore is noted as shiny with distinct rifling. The action appears to function correctly and smoothly. The hardwood stock shows numerous small dings, compression marks, and surface scratches consistent with its age and military service, but remains structurally sound with no significant cracks or repairs observed. The bolt is non-matching to the rest of the rifle.
