Description
An antique fixed-blade utility or hunting knife manufactured by the American Cutlery Co. of Chicago, Illinois. This knife features a full-tang construction with black handle scales made of a dark wood or possibly a hard composite such as gutta-percha. The scales are decorated with a diamond-checkered pattern to improve grip and are secured by three pins on each side. The knife is fitted with a simple steel double-crossguard. The single-edged steel blade has a clip-point profile with a false edge or swedge near the tip. The blade face is etched with the maker name American Cutlery Co. in a script font. The item is accompanied by a collector tag inscribed Early American Cutlery Co.
Condition report:
The knife is in aged, antique condition. Metal components, including the blade and crossguard, show heavy dark patina, significant pitting, and general oxidation. The blade edge displays wear and evidence of historical sharpening. The handle scales exhibit smoothing to the checkering from use and overall wear consistent with an early 20th-century tool.
