Description
This lot consists of a large-format studio portrait of an American soldier from the World War I era, circa 1917–1919. The subject is shown in a chest-up pose wearing the standard US Army M1917 standing-collar service coat with bronze buttons featuring the Great Seal of the United States. He is also wearing a WWI-pattern overseas garrison cap. The photograph exhibits professional hand-tinting, most notably in the flesh tones and the background. The portrait is housed in a period-correct quarter-sawn oak frame with a deep profile and a decorative bead-and-reel carved molding along the outer edge. The back of the frame is finished with a later cardboard replacement. A modern auction inventory tag marked B5632 is attached to the hanging wire. No original photographer marks or subject identifications are visible.
Condition report:
The photograph remains clear but shows signs of age including foxing and spotting, particularly evident in the background areas. Minor surface scuffs are present on the print. The oak frame shows typical age-related wear such as small dings, surface abrasions, and scuffs. The backing board is a non-original replacement.
