Description
A pair of cast iron railroad padlocks manufactured by the Adams & Westlake Company, commonly known as Adlake. Each lock features a heart-shaped cast iron body and a steel shackle with an attached iron chain. Both locks include an embossed swivel dust cover on the face marked ADLAKE. The first padlock is stamped on the reverse with the initials C B & Q for the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad, along with the patent date PAT MAR 20 1920. The second padlock is stamped on the reverse with markings for the Pennsylvania Railroad (P R R) and a 1920 patent date. These rugged locks were standard industrial security hardware for securing switch stands, rolling stock, and railroad facilities during the early to mid-20th century.
Condition report:
The padlocks and chains exhibit a heavy, dark brown patina with significant surface oxidation and rust throughout, consistent with extended outdoor industrial use. Both locks are in the closed position; as no keys are provided, the internal mechanical functionality has not been tested. The swivel dust covers are present, with one currently in the open position and the other closed. The iron chains show heavy oxidation and surface wear.
