Description
A collection of antique powder horns for muzzle-loading firearms, constructed from natural horn with carved wooden base plugs. The group features a decorative horn displaying polychrome painted designs in blue and red with geometric bands and arrow motifs, its base cap ornamented with a ring of decorative metal tacks and fitted with a leather suspension strap. The remaining horns are presented in various natural finishes ranging from smooth, translucent polished horn to more rugged, textured surfaces. Several examples exhibit darkened tips from heat-forming the spouts, and most include wooden base plugs secured by small pins or nails, with some featuring integrated metal rings for suspension. No manufacturer names, marks, or dates are discernible.
Condition report:
The collection shows a general patina, surface scratches, and edge wear commensurate with age and functional use. The decorated specimen exhibits areas of paint loss. The leather suspension strap shows age-related wear and stiffening. Wooden plugs exhibit minor shrinkage and small stress cracks consistent with the material.
