Gun Collectors Dream Auction #86 Collector Auction
Lot 1194:
Description
This Belgian made side by side hammer shotgun is chambered in 12 gauge and features exceptionally long barrels constructed of laminated steel. The intended configuration is for field use, featuring a top rib fitted with a brass bead front sight leading back to an external hammer lock action operated by double triggers. Key markings include the top rib designation BELGIUM LAMINATED STEEL and the sideplates stamped SAXTON over BELGIUM. Detailed views of the barrel flats and water table reveal several Liege, Belgium proof marks, including a crowned ELG in an oval, the 18.2 bore diameter marking, and various inspection stamps such as FD, JK, and 17.4. The two piece wood furniture features checkering at the wrist and forend, while the butt is fitted with a non original hard rubber replacement buttplate bearing the WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. logo. Note – As an antique or black powder firearm, this item does not require a background check.
Condition report:
The firearm is in overall fair condition, exhibiting heavy honest wear consistent with its age. Metal surfaces have aged to a dark mottled brown patina with widespread surface oxidation and areas of light pitting throughout the barrels and receiver. The barrel finish has thinned but still clearly displays the characteristic pattern of laminated steel. The bore is dark and pitted, which is typical for a black powder era piece. The checkered wood stock shows significant wear with numerous dings, scratches, and handling marks, though it remains structurally sound. The replacement Winchester buttplate is worn with some minor losses at the edges. While the hammers and triggers appear to function mechanically, we have not function tested this firearm.
