Gun Collectors Dream Auction #86 Collector Auction
Lot 1333:
Description
This collection consists of a lot of 132 rounds of .38 Short Colt ammunition, presented in two original partial boxes and a quantity of loose cartridges. The grouping includes a Western Cartridges yellow, blue, and red box labeled 38 SHORT COLT 130 GRAIN Lubaloy BULLET and a Remington Kleanbore green and red box marked 38 SHORT COLT LEAD BULLET with catalog number 7238 and the DuPont logo. The cartridges feature brass casings and lead projectiles, including examples with the copper-colored Lubaloy coating. Verbatim markings transcribed from the headstamps and box labels include WESTERN .38 SHORT COLT, W-W .38 SHORT COLT, REM-UMC .38 SHORT, and REM-UMC 38 SHORT. A plastic bag contains the remaining loose rounds, which appear to match the caliber and manufacture profiles of the boxed items. These cartridges are standard commercial loads intended for use in revolvers chambered for the .38 Short Colt cartridge and represent notable examples of mid-20th century American ammunition packaging and production.
Condition report:
Both original cardboard boxes show significant age-related wear, including scuffing, edge fraying, and minor tearing to the end flaps. The ammunition cartridges exhibit varying degrees of surface oxidation and tarnish on both the brass cases and the lead projectiles. Several of the lead bullets show a heavy white oxidized coating on the lubricant grooves and exposed surfaces. The brass casings show typical darkening and tarnish consistent with long-term storage. All rounds appear to be live and intact, though they have not been function-tested for reliability.
