Description

This item is a 20th-century reproduction of the 1796 unfinished Athenaeum portrait of George Washington by Gilbert Stuart. The work consists of a color print, likely a lithograph or photogravure, on a canvas-textured substrate that is mounted to a wooden panel. The portrait follows the Neoclassical style of the original, depicting Washington from the chest up with the lower portions of the composition left in an atmospheric, unfinished state. A small printed copyright symbol is visible in the lower-left corner of the image field. The verso of the panel shows a two-plank wooden backing board. Attached to the hanging wire are two handwritten paper tags; one identifies the subject as George Washington Athenaeum Portrait and the other includes the reference number 1925-49 and notes George Washington Portrait with original frame. The work is housed in a gilded wood and gesso frame featuring a repeating foliate and floral molding.

Condition report:

The image surface shows light surface dirt and scattered foxing spots, primarily concentrated in the lower unpainted areas. The gilded frame exhibits prominent craquelure throughout the gesso and some minor losses to the gilded finish. The wooden backing board on the verso has a significant area of splintered loss in the lower right quadrant.
