Description
This late 19th-century chromolithograph is titled Battle of Spotsylvania and depicts a chaotic scene from the American Civil War. The artwork portrays Union and Confederate forces engaged in intense hand-to-hand combat at the defensive earthworks known as the Bloody Angle. Prominently featured are several battle flags, including the United States flag and the Confederate battle flag, amidst clouds of gunsmoke and exploding shells. The foreground includes several fallen and wounded soldiers. Text along the bottom margin includes Battle of Spotsylvania at the lower left; Copyright 1887 by L. Prang and Co. Boston with the publisher’s shield and rose mark at the lower center; and American Lithographic Co. at the lower right. The print is presented in a dark-stained wood frame with a beaded inner edge under glass. The back of the frame is finished with a brown paper backing and includes a hanging wire and a small inventory tag.
Condition report:
The print is in good overall condition with light, even toning to the paper consistent with its age. There is no evidence of significant foxing, moisture staining, or tears. The frame shows minor scuffs and surface wear to the wood finish.
