Description

This Smith & Wesson K-22 Masterpiece (Pre-Model 17) is a double-action revolver chambered for the .22 Long Rifle cartridge. The firearm features a 6-inch barrel with a pinned front blade sight and a micro-adjustable rear notch sight. The frame is a 5-screw K-frame design with a blued finish on the barrel and frame, complemented by case-hardened finishes on the hammer and trigger. A notable feature of this example is the custom silver-colored metal grips, likely silver-plated brass, which exhibit intricate hand-engraved scrollwork and gold-toned overlays depicting an Aztec calendar and a profile of a figure in a feathered headdress. Key markings include the manufacturer name SMITH & WESSON on the left side of the barrel and K.22 LONG RIFLE CTG on the right. The right side of the frame bears the four-line address MADE IN U.S.A. / MARCAS REGISTRADAS / SMITH & WESSON / SPRINGFIELD, MASS. while the left side features the large S&W trademark logo. The serial number K 188700 is stamped on the butt, with the matching number 188700 and the letter K visible on the rear face of the cylinder. The crane is marked with assembly numbers 70704 and 4. The revolver is accompanied by a weathered brown leather holster with a snap-fastened retaining strap. Note – All firearms require a federal 4473 background check.

Condition report:

The revolver retains a significant portion of its original blued finish, though visible thinning and wear are present at the muzzle and along the sharp edges of the frame and cylinder. A distinct drag line is visible on the cylinder from standard use. The case coloring on the hammer and trigger remains visible but has muted with age. The custom metal grips show some surface tarnish and light handling marks. The bore is bright with sharp, well-defined rifling. The double and single action appear to function correctly with solid cylinder lockup. The leather holster shows significant surface wear, scuffing, and cracking consistent with field use, though the stitching remains intact.
