Description
This Winchester Model 97 pump action shotgun is chambered in 12 gauge and configured as a riot gun with a 20 inch barrel and a single bead front sight. The barrel is marked with Model 97 Winchester 12 Ga. along with 2 3/4 Cham. and Cyl. to indicate a cylinder bore choke. The barrel address identifies the manufacturer as Winchester Repeating Arms Co. in New Haven, Connecticut, and lists a series of patent dates ending with July 5, 10. This example features a take down receiver with the serial number 904574 stamped on both the underside of the receiver and the magazine tube extension, with an E character positioned above the number on the receiver. The metal finish shows extensive wear with the original bluing having largely thinned to a smooth dark brown patina with areas of scattered surface oxidation. The furniture consists of a walnut ribbed forend and a smooth walnut buttstock fitted with a checkered hard rubber buttplate bearing the Winchester Repeating Arms Co. logo. Notable law enforcement provenance is visible on this piece, with the markings S. A. Police No 26 stamped into the left side of the receiver and the left side of the buttstock, likely indicating service with the South Australian Police. Additionally, the phrase Goss on Boss has been hand scratched into the left side of the receiver. While the action appears to cycle and function correctly, we have not function tested this firearm. Condition report:
The metal finish exhibits significant honest wear, having thinned to a uniform dark brown patina with scattered surface oxidation and some minor handling scratches. The bore was not inspected. The walnut buttstock and forend show various dings, scratches, and impressions consistent with long term field or police service use, though they remain structurally sound. The markings remain legible, though the hand scratched Goss on Boss text is crude. The action appears to cycle smoothly and the hammer holds at full and half cock, though the mechanical safety and firing capabilities have not been verified.
