Description
This lot consists of 50 central fire cartridges in .38 S&W caliber manufactured by The Union Metallic Cartridge Co. of Bridgeport, Connecticut. The rounds are packaged in a vintage two-piece cardboard box which indicates the cartridges are loaded with 15 grains of powder and 146-grain lead bullets. Verbatim markings on the top label include 50 .38 S. & W. CENTRAL FIRE CARTRIDGES, the red UMC logo, and THE UNION METALLIC CARTRIDGE Co, BRIDGEPORT, CONN., U.S.A. Side labels note the ammunition is Adapted to .38 Calibre Smith & Wesson and other Revolvers and states that they were made expressly for our .38 Calibre Revolvers. The bottom of the box contains a printed GUARANTEE for use in various firearms manufactured by Smith & Wesson, Colt, Winchester, Marlin, Remington, Savage, and Stevens. The ammunition features a mix of headstamps including U.M.C. .38 S&W and REM-UMC .38 S&W, representing the era around the 1912 merger with Remington Arms. The collection includes lead round-nose projectiles and brass cases. Note – As an antique or black powder firearm, this item does not require a background check.
Condition report:
The two-piece cardboard box shows significant age-related wear, including shelf rubbing, darkening, and staining throughout. There is notable fraying and some separation along the edges and corners. The labels remain mostly legible despite the overall darkening and some minor paper loss. The ammunition exhibits tarnishing on the brass cases and varying degrees of oxidation on the lead projectiles. The primers show a darkened patina consistent with age. One cartridge is currently resting horizontally on top of the internal staggered grid.
