Description
This lot consists of a total of 45 vintage cartridges of .44 S&W Russian caliber contained within two period original boxes. The first box features a blue label on plaid-patterned cardboard and was manufactured by the Remington Arms-Union Metallic Cartridge Co. of Bridgeport, Connecticut. Verbatim markings on the top label include .44 S. & W. RUSSIAN, 50 CENTRAL FIRE CARTRIDGES, 246 GRS. BULLET, and the red Remington UMC logo. Additional markings on the blue label specify Remington Arms-Union Metallic Cartridge Co Ammunition & Fire Arms, Union Metallic Cartridge Works, and Bridgeport, Conn., U.S.A. The second box features a salmon-colored label from The Peters Cartridge Company of Cincinnati, Ohio, and is marked 50 .44 S. & W. Russian Model 50 SMOKELESS CARTRIDGES. Verbatim markings on the Peters box specify SMOKELESS POWDER and Manufactured By The Peters Cartridge Company Cincinnati, O. U. S. A. with the code 1047. The 45 cartridges feature brass casings and lead bullets, with headstamps including REM-UMC 44 S&WR, U.M.C. .44 S&WR, and PETERS 44 S&WR. The Remington box also contains a small piece of cleaning cloth. Note – As an antique or black powder firearm, this item does not require a background check.
Condition report:
The cartridges show visible lead oxidation on the bullets and varying degrees of tarnish and darkening on the brass casings. The ammunition appears original but has not been tested for functionality. Both cardboard boxes show significant age-related wear including surface staining, edge fraying, and corner rounding. The Remington plaid box has a partially torn red label on the side and a split seam on the lid. The Peters salmon box exhibits more advanced wear with tape residue, significant staining, label loss, and split edges on the tray.
