Gun Collectors Dream Auction #86 Collector Auction
Lot 226:
Sold for: $60
Description
This lot features 20 rounds of centerfire ammunition chambered in .303 Savage caliber, designed for use in Savage repeating rifles. The cartridges are housed in a two-piece green cardboard box manufactured by the Western Cartridge Company of East Alton, Illinois. These rounds are loaded with 190-grain Lubaloy non-fouling soft point bullets. The box exterior features the Western red diamond logo and includes prominent markings such as 20 CENTRAL FIRE CARTRIDGES, .303 SAVAGE, and LUBALOY Non-Fouling Bullet. The ammunition is a mixed grouping of vintage production, with individual cartridge headstamps transcribed as WESTERN .303 SAV and REM-UMC .303 SAV. The packaging also bears the manufacturer guarantee for use in standard makes of arms. Note – As an antique or black powder firearm, this item does not require a background check.
Condition report:
The two-piece cardboard box shows significant shelf wear, including edge fraying, corner crushing, and minor surface paper loss on the printed labels. The brass cartridge cases exhibit a dark patina with visible oxidation, tarnish, and areas of surface corrosion. The lead soft point bullets show some darkening due to age but remain structurally sound. The ammunition appears live but is sold for its historical and collectible value; no guarantee of functionality or safety is provided as these rounds have not been tested.
