Lot 298:
Description
A lot of 50 vintage .38 Winchester centerfire cartridges produced by the Remington Arms-Union Metallic Cartridge Co. (Remington-UMC). These rounds were originally designed for use in rifles such as the Winchester Model 1873 and the Remington-UMC repeating rifles illustrated on the side of the box. The ammunition features 180 grain lead bullets and brass cases. The cartridges are contained in an original two-piece green-label box with the iconic red Remington-UMC logo. Verbatim markings on the top label include .38 WINCHESTER, 50 CENTRAL FIRE CARTRIDGES, 180 GRS. BULLET, and REMINGTON ARMS-UNION METALLIC CARTRIDGE CO. AMMUNITION & FIREARMS UNION METALLIC CARTRIDGE WORKS BRIDGEPORT, CONN., U.S.A. The end labels are marked .38 WINCHESTER and BLACK POWDER. The bottom of the box displays a 4-H GUARANTEE and its Spanish equivalent, GARANTIA, recommending use in Remington-UMC, Smith & Wesson, Colt, Winchester, Marlin, Savage, and Stevens firearms. Headstamps on the brass casings are visible as REM-UMC 38 WCF and REM-UMC .38-40. Note – As an antique or black powder firearm, this item does not require a background check.
Condition report:
The ammunition box is in fair condition, exhibiting significant shelf wear, edge fraying, paper loss on the labels, and staining consistent with age. Clear adhesive tape repairs are present on several corners of the lid and base. The ammunition itself shows a natural aged patina, with some oxidation present on the lead bullet tips and moderate tarnish on the brass cases. The cartridges appear to be live and intact, though the functional reliability of this vintage black powder ammunition is not guaranteed for use.
