Lot 309:
Description
This sporterized bolt-action rifle is built on a German Mauser Gewehr 98 large-ring receiver and is chambered in 7x57mm Mauser. The rifle features a blued sporting barrel without iron sights, optimized for use with the included optic. The receiver retains its original military markings, including the Fraktur script Gew. 98. on the left side wall and imperial German proof marks on the receiver ring. The top of the barrel is engraved with Ashton and MADE IN U.S.A., signifying the maker of the sporting conversion, while the left side is marked 7 X 57. The firearm is mounted in a custom-style walnut stock characterized by a Monte Carlo comb, a prominent left-side cheekpiece, and fine checkering on the wrist and forend. The stock is enhanced with a contrasting dark wood forend tip and pistol grip cap with spacers. It comes equipped with a Scope brand 3X-9X32 variable power optic on a one-piece Redfield mount and includes an adjustable leather sling. Key markings include the serial number 7280 with a w suffix stamped on the receiver ring and bolt handle. The receiver ring is also stamped with WA, M, and OBI. The textured buttplate is a composite material marked FAJEN. Note – All firearms require a federal 4473 background check.
Condition report:
The metal components retain a strong blued finish with some thinning on the bolt handle, trigger guard, and receiver edges. Minor scattered surface pitting is visible on the receiver ring, along with light handling marks throughout. The bore is bright with sharp rifling. The bolt action appears to function smoothly, though the firearm has not been function-tested. The wood stock is in very good condition, showing typical small dings and shallow scratches consistent with field use, with the checkering remaining well-defined. The optic has clear glass and the adjustment rings operate correctly. The leather sling is pliable but exhibits surface age-cracking and moderate wear.
