Gun Collectors Dream Auction #86 Collector Auction
Lot 344:
Description
This is a vintage laboratory or pharmaceutical double beam balance scale manufactured by Ohaus. The instrument features a heavy cast iron base finished in black paint and two circular white milk glass weighing pans. The scale utilizes two horizontal beams: an upper beam graduated from 0 to 10 grams and a lower notched beam graduated from 0 to 200 grams. A rectangular brass poise is located on the upper beam, and a cylindrical grey metal poise hangs from the lower beam. A central vertical pointer facilitates leveling. A threaded rod with a knurled brass counterweight for fine adjustment is positioned beneath the right pan, and a leveling screw is situated at the rear of the base. An oval metal identification plate on the front is marked OHAUS U.S.A. and lists distributors FISHER SCIENTIFIC CO. PITTSBURGH, PA. – ST. LOUIS, MO. and EIMER & AMEND NEW YORK, N. Y. Additional markings on the beams include OHAUS, 10 BEAM GRAM, and 200 GRAM. The side supports are decorated with a stylized circular geometric motif.
Condition report:
The scale is in used, vintage condition. All major mechanical components appear present. The metal beams and poises show surface oxidation and darkening commensurate with age. There is visible wear and minor paint loss on the cast iron base. The milk glass pans appear to be intact without significant chips or cracks. The mechanical movement is functional, though the instrument has not been tested for accuracy or calibration.
