Description
This lot features a Smith & Wesson Model 544 double action revolver, produced as a commemorative edition for the 1986 Texas Sesquicentennial. Chambered in the classic .44-40 caliber, the firearm is configured with a 5 inch barrel and a high-polish blued finish across the frame and cylinder. The revolver features a case-hardened target hammer and a matching case-hardened trigger. The furniture consists of smooth, attractive wood target-style grips adorned with silver-tone S&W medallions. Sighting is provided by a ramped front sight with an orange insert and a micrometric click-adjustable rear sight. Key markings include SMITH & WESSON and 44/40 on the left side of the barrel, with the right side featuring gold-tone engraving that reads 1836 TEXAS 1986. The right side of the frame displays a gold-tone commemorative seal depicting the state of Texas with a covered wagon icon. Transcription of the markings under the crane reveals TWT0647 over MOD 544, and the bottom of the grip frame is stamped with the matching serial number TWT0647. The revolver is housed in its original commemorative wooden display case, featuring a blue velvet-lined interior and burnt-in graphics on the lid for the Texas Independence Association. Note – All firearms require a federal 4473 background check.
Condition report:
The revolver is in excellent overall condition, retaining nearly all of its high-polish blued finish with only a very faint cylinder turn line and minimal handling marks. The case-hardened finish on the hammer and trigger remains vibrant. The bore is bright with sharp, clean rifling. The smooth wood grips are in excellent condition with no visible cracks or significant dings. The action appears to function correctly in single and double action with tight cylinder lockup, though we have not function-tested this firearm. The wooden display case is in good condition, showing some light surface scratches and minor shelf wear to the exterior wood while the velvet interior remains clean.
