Gun Collectors Dream Auction #86 Collector Auction
Lot 36:
Sold for: $1,200
Description
This lot features a pair of Scottish Murdoch-style flintlock pistols and two accompanying bullet molds. The pistols are black powder reproductions of traditional all-metal Highland firearms. Each pistol is chambered for .52 caliber and features a 7 inch barrel that transitions from an octagonal breech to a flared cannon-style muzzle. The polished steel bodies are decorated with ornate pierce-work and scroll engraving consistent with the Doune style of the late 18th century. The grips are fitted with inset oval cream-colored panels and terminate in traditional ram’s horn butts with threaded, removable vent prickers. Functional features include a steel belt hook on the left side of each frame and a ball-head button trigger. The accompanying scissor-type bullet molds feature red-dipped handles and were produced by Dixie Gun Works. Key markings on the molds include DIXIE GUN WORKS along with the caliber designations 510 and 530. While the pistols themselves lack visible maker’s marks, they are attributed to a modern manufacturer specializing in black powder replicas. Note – As an antique or black powder firearm, this item does not require a background check.
Condition report:
The pistols are in good overall condition with the steel surfaces retaining a bright polished finish. There are scattered small patches of light surface oxidation and minor pitting visible upon close inspection, particularly around the breech and lock plate areas. The actions appear to function correctly with the hammers holding at both half and full cock. The ramrods and vent prickers are present and intact. The bullet molds show minor surface wear and some loss to the red handle coating but remain functional.
