Description
This late 19th-century chromolithograph on paper depicts a portrait of George Washington, based on the iconic 1796 “Athenaeum” portrait by Gilbert Stuart. The work features Washington in a three-quarter view, looking slightly to the left, set within an oval border. This specific print is identified by an accompanying tag as being published by H. Hallett and Company, a firm known for producing mass-market historical and religious prints in Portland, Maine, during the 1880s. The artwork is housed in a rustic, hand-carved wooden Adirondack-style frame. The frame features cross-lap joints at the corners, extending beyond the rectangular perimeter, and is decorated with carved leaf ornaments at three of the four junctions. The verso is enclosed with a solid wood panel held in place by metal fasteners.

Condition report:
The paper support shows significant condition issues, including prominent water staining and tide lines across the lower-left corner and the upper margin. There is general toning and foxing throughout the mount and print area. The hand-carved frame is missing one of its four decorative leaf ornaments at the upper-right corner. The wooden surface of the frame shows typical age-related wear and minor losses to the finish.
