Description
This late 19th-century chromolithograph depicts General Ulysses S. Grant during the American Civil War. The central figure is Grant, mounted on a bay horse and surveying the battlefield through a field glass. In the immediate foreground, a Black man wearing a red shirt and white headband supports a large American flag while attending to a wounded Union soldier lying on the ground. The background illustrates the chaos of battle, featuring smoke clouds, infantry units, artillery crews, and a farmhouse in the distance. The print is titled GEN. U. S. GRANT. in the lower center margin. The lower left corner is inscribed Published and Copyrighted by W. F. McLAUGHLIN and CO. Chicago. The lower right corner is inscribed SHOBER and CARQUEVILLE LITHO. CO. CHICAGO. The piece is housed in a contemporary black frame with a tan mat and a protective glazing. The reverse features a brown paper dust cover with a hanging wire and a gallery tag.
Condition report:
The print exhibits a prominent vertical center crease and various surface imperfections, including foxing and small stains concentrated in the lower center and left portions of the image. The paper shows age-related toning. The frame and mat are in stable condition with minor handling marks.
