Description
This is a Colt Model 1878 side-by-side double-barrel hammer shotgun, a classic 19th-century American sporting firearm. The shotgun features a break-action design with external hammers and double triggers. The barrels are configured side-by-side and transition into a receiver with a mottled dark brown patina. Key markings include the manufacturer’s name, Colt’s Pt. F. A. Mfg. Co., engraved on both the left and right lock plates. The serial number 12880 is stamped on the water table of the receiver and the corresponding barrel lug. The furniture consists of a checkered walnut stock and matching forend, both exhibiting significant wear consistent with age and field use. A prominent crack is visible in the wood, extending from the upper tang through the wrist area. The firearm is fitted with a simple bead front sight and a metal buttplate. Note – As an antique or black powder firearm, this item does not require a background check.
Condition report:
The metal surfaces show a heavy, dark brown patina with significant surface oxidation and localized fine pitting across the barrels and receiver. The bores were not inspected internally but likely mirror the exterior condition. The action appears to function correctly with hammers holding at full cock and releasing via the triggers, though the firearm has not been function-tested. The walnut stock and forend are in fair condition, showing numerous dings and a notable structural crack at the wrist.
