Description
This is a single J.C. Higgins Model 583.21 bolt-action shotgun chambered for 16 gauge shells. It features a 26-inch barrel with a fixed full choke, designed for 2 3/4-inch chambers. The firearm is equipped with an under-barrel tubular magazine and a smooth wood stock. The metal components were originally finished in a blueing that has now aged significantly. Key markings transcribed from the left side of the barrel include J.C. HIGGINS – MODEL 583.21 and SEARS, ROEBUCK AND CO. The top of the barrel specifies PROOF TESTED 16 GA.-FULL and 2 3/4″ CHAMBER. Sighting is provided by a single brass bead at the muzzle. The stock is completed with a red rubber recoil pad that bears the embossed J.C. Higgins signature. No serial number was located on the exterior of the firearm during inspection. Note – All firearms require a federal 4473 background check.
Condition report:
The metal surfaces show significant wear and thinning to the blued finish throughout. There are visible areas of light surface oxidation and pitting, primarily along the barrel and the magazine tube. The wood stock remains solid but displays multiple scratches, scuffs, and compressions consistent with age and field use. The bore was not inspected internally. The action appears to function correctly when cycled manually, though the firearm has not been function-tested with live ammunition. The red rubber recoil pad shows some age-related hardening and wear.
