Description
This is a Montgomery Ward and Co. Western Field Model 5100 side-by-side break-action shotgun chambered for 12 gauge shells with a 2 3/4 inch chamber. The firearm features 30 inch barrels constructed of selected forged steel with a textured solid rib and a single ivory-colored bead front sight. The receiver is case-hardened and features light decorative border engraving. The furniture consists of a checkered walnut pistol grip stock and a matching splinter-style forend. Key markings include Western Field MONTGOMERY WARD and CO. engraved on both sides of the receiver along with the model designation 5100. The top of the barrels are stamped SELECTED FORGED STEEL and PROOF TESTED 12 GAUGE — 2 3/4 INCH CHAMBER –. Additional markings found on the water table and barrel flats include a circled H, the letters Q R, and a 1. The shotgun is equipped with double triggers, a tang-mounted sliding safety, and a branded Western Field red rubber recoil pad. Note – All firearms require a federal 4473 background check.
Condition report:
The metal finish is in used condition, showing significant wear and thinning throughout. The blued barrels exhibit widespread oxidation and surface rust, with areas of pitting visible particularly toward the muzzles. The case-hardened receiver has faded to a mottled gray patina with scattered light oxidation. The wood stock and forend show numerous small dings, scratches, and handling marks consistent with field use, though the checkering remains generally well-defined. The red rubber recoil pad shows signs of aging and compression. The action appears to function correctly when opened and closed, however, we have not function-tested this firearm.
